Emma Stapleton-Thornell, PhD

Title/Position
Research Assistant Professor: Stapleton lab
Emma researches the effect of particulate matter on airway innate immunity in vitro and in diverse cohorts of people with and without chronic lung disease. Her passion in the BSI is to reduce the generation of microplastics by reducing inappropriate biohazard-bin use, and to reduce energy use floor-wide.

Ian Thornell, PhD

Ian investigates how ion transport processes shape epithelial function in health and disease. His research centers on chloride and acid-base transport, using electrophysiology and live-cell imaging to uncover how epithelial cells coordinate physiological processes. Through this lens, his lab explores the fundamental mechanisms that drive epithelial homeostasis and their disruption in disease.

Lorena Tran

Title/Position
Research Intern: Pezzulo Lab
Lorena researches the role of allergen exposure in conditions like asthma and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. She is particularly interested in developing cell culture and animal models to investigate the molecular mechanisms of inflammation in these diseases.
